Chevrolet has been out testing the 2017 ZL1 at Germanyās Automotive Testing Papenburg GmBH proving ground ā a 7.6-mile long, high-speed oval. The car managed to hit 202.3 miles per hour in one direction, and 193.3 miles per hour in the other, so the official top speed is the average at 198 miles per hour. For reference, this is the same assigned top speed as the Z06 Corvette, and 8 miles per hour slower than the latest ZR1 (205 mph).
The 2017 ZL1 tested was equipped with a 10-speed automatic transmission, and rode on a set of production Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar 3 rubbers, set at 44 psi for high-speed driving. Chevy has provided that the only changes made from a stock version are the data logging equipment and mandated safety gear.
Chevy made the ZL1 to be driven fast. It has special aerodynamic features that give it stability, and some major power heading to the wheels. Every 2017 Camaro ZL1 made is powered by a 650 horsepower/650 lbs.-ft. of torque making supercharged 6.2L engine, and can be paired with either a six-speed manual transmission, or new 10-speed automatic transmission. Theyāre also equipped with Magnetic Ride Control and electronic limited-slip differential. It evenĀ has the stopping power to back up high-speeds thanks to the Brembo brakes with six-piston Monobloc front calipers and two-piece rotors.
āItās the most capable ā and fastest ā Camaro ever.āĀ – Al Oppenheiser, Camaro chief engineer.
Other ZL1 numbers to consider are:
- 0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds
- Quarter mile in 11.4 seconds at 127 mph
- 1.02g max cornering
- 60-0 mph braking in 107 feet
The tested 10-speed model can be had for $65,830, and you’ll come in at $63,435 for a manual version. So you can basically buy a supercar dressed up as a muscle car for the mid $60K range in the 2017 ZL1 ā thatās insane!
