A 2017 Camaro ZL1 and 2017 Ford GT joined each other for a track day at Mid-Ohio. The results are pretty impressive and somewhat unexpected if you’re a ZL1 fan, but the Ford GT doesn’t exactly give up its spot either. It’s worth noting that the outcome wouldn’t be the same if professional drivers were manning the cars, but the video proves that the ZL1 has some might behind it. Just when you think the Ford GT is going to walk away, it never quite does.
The video explains that both the ZL1 and Ford GT are out for the first time on the track. While it’s hard to believe that the driver of the Ford GT was all in, the Ford supercar had a hard time leaving behind the ZL1. To be honest, the driver of the GT had quite a bit more to lose with the $400,000+ price tag on the line if he crashed it, which is always something to consider on the track.
Weight is the bane of the Camaro’s existence as it actually makes more horsepower (okay, by only three whole numbers), but the GT is a lot lighter and has an edge when it comes to aerodynamics. We honestly expected the GT to blow the Camaro away through the straightaways, considering the price tag and design differences.
Even taking into account that the driver of the Ford GT isn’t a professional, it’s still a noble run for the ZL1, because, well, he’s not a professional driver either! So, the GT might have some cushion with excuses to explain the run, but the ZL1 is being operated under the same conditions either way.
Either way, it looks like a fun day at the track, and the ZL1 driver must feel really proud of himself for hold his own against the GT!
