After many months of anticipation and speculation, Chevy has finally released the 6th-gen ZL1, and itās a bit of game changer. The new ZL1 offers more power, more speed, and more Camaro than ever before! Ready to take on anything the world has to the throw at it, the sixth-generation ZL1 is already a champ.
Although many had already expected the supercharged 6.2L LT4 to show up in the ZL1, it still has us drooling. The 640 horsepower/640 lb.-ft. of torque engine is mated to a six-speed manual, or an all new 10-speed automatic. This 10-speed automatic is coming to more GM models by 2018.
The 2017 ZL1 has a magnetic ride suspension, limited-slip differential, carbon fiber body work on the hood, a large splitter, wing, wider fenders, unique rockers, and that Flow-Tie emblem is getting carried over from the Z/28. GM is giving the ZL1 20-inch forged aluminum wheels with Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar tires with a unique compound to keep the car hunkered down under all that power. When it gets up to speed, six-piston Brembos and two-piece rotors will give is a majorly short stopping distance.
Inside, the ZL1 has Recaro seats, a suede flat-bottom steering wheel, and optional Performance Data Recorder. The Performance Data Recorder is the same one seen in the Corvettes, and the new 1LE package (not yet on sale). It also has 11 heat extractors for the powertrain, a drive-mode selector, and a dual mode exhaust system.
It weighs in at 200 pounds lighter than the previous car, with 60 more horsepower and 80 lb.-ft. more torque. That combo is going to be absolutely lethal to any competitors!Ā Not to mention, itās a car thatās going to get good use out of that power thanks to the design and suspension.
We posted a video a few days ago when Chevy was teasing about the release. Now we understand why the Camaro was going through so many gears, it must have been the 10-speed auto, that threw us off a bit. Also, we werenāt sure what to think of the Flow-Tie vision (i.e., Z/28), now we know. But it was that distinct supercharger whine that had us looking forward to the release day, and weāre not even a little disappointed!
