Taking a Closer Look at the Sportmachines Super Stock Sy/Ty Wheels

The turbocharged GMC Syclone and Typhoon trucks haven’t rolled off of the GM assembly line in over 30 years, but their popularity and interest from enthusiasts have never been higher. Neither have the values, evidently, based on what they sell for these days. They’re pricey, but what’s not to love? Unique body cladding, a bespoke turbocharged drivetrain, and the ability to create an AWD drag toy that’s stealthy enough for the street. Imagine putting the hurting on a modern Hellcat-powered Mopar in a ’90s V6 S10. It certainly has an appeal that only few vehicles can match.

When it comes to aftermarket wheels for these trucks, there have always been various options available with various price points, the most common being a simple OEM C4 Corvette wheels swap. But what if you’re looking for a premium wheel that looks “right” on your Syclone or Typhoon, that has the right bolt pattern, offset, and will look timeless on the truck? There aren’t many options, however, there certainly is one.

After attending the Carlisle Truck Nationals this Summer, and after a visit to Florida some time back, we realize that our friends at Sportmachines have the solution. In case you’re unaware, Sportmachines is a supplier of performance and restoration parts for Syclone, Typhoon, and the Sonoma GT. They also have a shop that repairs, services, and modifies (to a substantial level in most cases) these early ’90s GMCs. Their name, Sportmachines, is a nod towards the original term GMC referred to the trucks in the marketing materials.

Sportmachines founder, Tom Mandrov, has had nothing but tunnel vision for these trucks for over twenty years, knowing the in-and-outs of them, knowing what works and what doesn’t, and knowing how to tune them the right way. Wanting to leave his mark on these truck’s legacy, in addition to his business, he decided that it was time for a premium level, three-piece wheel. There are other options out there, but he wanted a wheel that had the correct spoke style, a similar look to the OEM wheel, and the ability to customize them based on the color and the intentions of your truck. Where did he look? Well, himself and his team.

He and his team designed and developed the ultimate, fully-customizable wheel, called the Super Stock, for the ’80s and ’90s S-series trucks. The offer countless configurations and options (depicted below).
