1969 was a special year for a lot of cars. The introduction of the Dodge Challenger came that fall following the first ever year for the Trans Am and the Trans Ams cousin, the Chevy Camaro got an epic new color added to the lineup. A color that would set it apart in a crowd of brightly painted muscle and pony cars, Hugger Orange. Arguably the best shade of orange to ever touch metal, this color was an incredible success for the car and definitely brought more attention to the icon that already demanded it.
However, the color was not intended to define the Camaro and was only a special option for 1969 and 1970 and despite how well it was received, GM moved forward with different shades of orange as an option for almost all of the other year models. 30 years later, Chevy revived the color to celebrate 32 years of the Camaro in turn creating another highly sought after and incredibly rare Camaro. Although one of the rarest Hugger Orange Camaros had not even been built at that time it is now up for grabs.
This 2020 COPO Camaro that is heading to Mecumās Kissimmee auction that is scheduled for August 27-29 is quite possibly one of the rarest cars ever made. Only 69 COPO Camaros were made that year with either a supercharged LSX-derived V8 or a naturally aspirated 427 and only one of those came in Hugger Orange, making this Camaro a one-of-one.
The 5.7-liter utilizes LSX-SC cylinder heads and a 2.65-liter Magnuson supercharger to make 570 horsepower. While that may seem like a humble about of power, it affords the Camaro an 8.5 second ETA in the 1/4 mile. It probably doesnāt hurt that the interior is stripped down to the minimum and the car is equipped with a TH400 transmission and a solid rear axle.
