This seemed like a long time coming; an aftermarket manual transmission pedal conversion for ’78-88 GM G- (and) A-body, that bolts in like a factory piece, has a factory feel, and is readily available. Throw in the fact that the quality is off of the charts, and you have quite a nice piece. That’s the most basic way to describe the clutch puddle assemblies now being offered by Three Pedals.
Now, we know what you’e thinking; GM made manual transmission-equipped G-bodies and A-bodies, so why not just source one of those?
Sure, we suppose you could, but there’s a couple of things that you have to keep in mind; first, they’re few and far between. Only a tiny percentage of these cars left the factory with a clutch pedal, and most of them have already taken up residency in the wrecking yards and have already been picked apart years ago. So if you think you’ll be able to nab one of these from the yard around the corner, tomorrow, you might as well forget it.
Secondly, the OEM units are now 40 years old. They’ll more than likely need rebuilt, and when they were initially conceived, they weren’t really designed for the proverbial heel and toe. The clutch peal was a bit further to the left than most racers would like,
So What’s It Like to Live With?
Your author has driven a G-body Monte Carlo SS with this clutch pedal assembly installed, and to say that it felt right at home would be an understatement. The pedal spacing is right where it needs to be, the pedal feel is just right, and the design made performance driving a blast. It’s comparable to driving a 5th-generation Camaro.
While at the Three Pedals facility, Josh Korsower walked me through the installation procedure, and illustrated how easy it would be for the average enthusiast to install this into his or her car. With GMEFI’s ’84 Hurst/Olds project intended to be a 6-speed equipped car, don’t be surprised if one of these end up mounted beneath the dash!
We could elaborate further, but we’ll let Josh take it away from here:
