Team Chevy Launches Race Spec Camaro GT4.R

The new Camaro GT4.R is built to global GT4 regulations and is eligible to compete in the GS category of the IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge, and the GTS class of the Pirelli World Challenge — accounting for two of the top GT championship racing series in North America.

The racing firm that develops Chevy’s Corvette race cars, Pratt & Miller, is lending a hand with the engineering of the Camaro GT4.R. It gets its downforce from a new rear wing, new front splitters, and new front dive planes. The Camaro’s adjustable coilover dampers come from Ohlins, and Brembo provides the adjustable ABS braking system.

There’s no photos of the actual car available as of yet, Team Chevy decided it would toy with our emotions and release a rendering and teaser video this morning.

The drive-by video below lets us listen in on the race-spec Camaro SS with 6.2L V8, backed by a Xtrac six-speed sequential transmission. Xtrac also provides the limited-slip rear differential and traction control systems.

This teaser video indicates that we’ll get to see the Camaro GT4.R sometime this year in competition, but doesn’t give away many specifics about when. Considering the upcoming race schedules for the important aforementioned competitors, it’s likely to show up on a track within the next 30 days.

GT4 Racing is so popular right now that other brands like Ford, Porsche, and McLaren are also putting out GT4 series cars, and more brands will be joining them in the near future. Chevy has already been in the ring with it’s fifth-generation Camaro GS and Z/28.R — both models competed in the CTSC and World Challenge from 2010 through 2016. This new exciting class is spurring some interesting rivalries between both American muscle and European cars!
